Frank Gorshin
(1934-2005)

Born on April 5, 1934 in Lawrenceville, Frank Gorshin has an impressive life as an actor, comedian and impersonator. Gorshin is an alumnus of the Lawrenceville Boys’ Club and starred in a performance during a Fourth of July celebration at Arsenal Park. At the age of fifteen he won a talent show contest at the Enright Theatre in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh.

He made his debut on the television and movie screens in 1956 appearing that first year in the movies The Proud and the Profane (he played Harry), Runaway Daughters (where he played the character Tommy), Hot Rod Girl (Flat Top), Between Heaven and Hell (Pvt. Millard) and he also appeared in the June 10, 1956 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Gorshin would return to Alfred Hitchcock Presents and make dozens more appearances in movies as well as the popular television shows The Untouchables, Carol Burnett Show, Hawaii Five-O, S.W.A.T., High Chaparall, Charlie’s Angels, Buck Rogers and the 25th Century and the Donnie and Marie Show. His movie career includes a wide array of films ranging from kid’s movies such as That Darn Cat to thrillers such as 12 Monkeys.

Gorshin is also well known for his nightclub acts and Broadway performances. However, he is doubtlessly best known for his role on the 1960’s Batman TV series, where he played a villain named, “The Riddler.”
